Carrying April 10

Image
Two years ago today was diagnosis day. I would still call it the worst day of my life, a phone call I wouldn’t wish on anyone. And… Two years later, I am healthy and happy. Last year, I took a personal day on April 10 because I didn’t know how I would feel. I considered doing that again, but I wanted to see what it would feel like to have a normal day. Will April 10 ever just be a “normal” day again? Probably not. But it feels okay to be at school. Tonight is the ISEA Delegate Assembly, which takes place every two years. Two years ago, on April 12, I was on my way to dinner before DA when I got a phone call to schedule my genetic counseling appointment. My friends Allison and Anne held me up. I was completely overwhelmed. I’m certain I will be more present this time around. Every new cancer diagnosis, whether it’s a friend, a loved one, a family member, a student, or even someone in my newsfeed, hits differently. Yes, every case is different, but they all start with that firs...

Just another day in paradise....

My dad had his shoulder replaced today.  While the surgery was delayed due to weird hospital things, it sounds like the surgery was a success.  He's requested no visitors (besides mom), so I'll see him when he gets home tomorrow.  It will feel like a long recovery ahead for him. I met with the medical oncologist's nurse practitioner today and had labs...then I had my first shot of Lupron...in. my. ass.  Which will shut down my ovaries, putting me into medically induced menopause.  She told me I may start to feel side effects in as soon as two days.  In 2 weeks I will start anastrozole....2 weeks is August 23.  The first day of school.  The ARNP told me that she had an ISU professor that had such brain fog on anastrozole for the first few months that she couldn't teach.  That won't be me.  Surely.  Zero side effects (except no period....that one I like.) One of my Brookview friends randomly checked in this morning, and it was i...

It Wasn't a Dream

4/11/24  Today was better.  I went to school, picked up my room, got set up.  Friends brought coffee, flowers and hugs. I only cried a couple of times!  Then the day went on….like “normal.”  I did call Dr. Kippes at 8 to ask some questions.  At 11:10, Katzmann Breast Center called and I totally ran out on my class, and STILL missed the call.  For the love.  I called them back and left a message and asked them to call me after 11:30.  I was NOT hungry for lunch.  But then they called and they can get me in tomorrow!  9AM!  I asked if I was dying and that’s why they could get me in so soon.  She said no, that they had a cancellation.   Dr. Kippes’s nurse also called and set up a video appointment with me for 4PM today!  Funny how people will call you back when the diagnosis is cancer.  Ugh. Anyway, I made it through 7 classes until I felt DONE…..the poor 8th and 9th class.   Dr. Kippes had my r...
